We are excited that you are interested in becoming a nurse and have a passion to serve others. The South Plains College nursing program has successfully graduated many nurses that serve our local healthcare community.  The healthcare community in our area is robust and dynamic as our facilities serve a 62-county-wide area.  With such a broad service area our facilities need good nurses and look to hire our nursing students due to the excellent clinical experiences the students receive.  Our students are prepared to enter nursing practice right after graduation and begin caring for patients. This is a two-year degree plan. Students that successfully complete the Associate Nursing Degree Plan are then eligible to apply to take the State Board Exam (Next Gen NCLEX) for Registered Nurse Licensure.

Information for Texas Success Initiative:
**Please Note ALL students wishing to apply to the Levelland ADN Program MUST be TSI compliant.
The TSI is a state program designed to enhance a student’s opportunity for success in their college studies.  The program requires that students entering college be tested to see that they are prepared for college level work that is considered Reading, Writing and Math intensive.
All new students entering Texas Colleges and Universities are required to take a placement test prior to enrolling in college level courses, unless exempt from testing under specified state standards.
The placement test determines your college readiness in Reading, Writing, and Math.  The tests are multiple-choice, with a possible writing section.
Exemptions:
A student is exempt from taking the placement test if he/she meets one or more of the following conditions:
  • SAT – a minimum score of Reading 480 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) 530 on Mathematics.
  • ACT – a minimum score of Composition 23, English and Math 19 to be exempt for both the reading and writing sections of the TSI assessment.
  • TSI – TSI scores:  Math 350, Reading 351, Writing 340 and Essay 4 or 5
  • TSIA2 – Math 950, ELAR 945 w/essay 5
Please contact the testing center for other testing exemptions and for further explanation of exemptions.
If you do not pass one or more areas of the placement test there are support courses designed to help you gain college level skills.  In addition, some courses require students to pass the placement test or be exempt before enrolling.
To schedule for the TSI test contact the Testing Center on the Levelland Campus at 806-716-2368 or online at www.southplainscollege.edu/testing
Study links for TSI compliance:  www.testpreview.com or TSIA2.accuplacer.org
A study guide is available at the SPC Library, or you may purchase one at the SPC bookstore.

Signing up for the TSI Test, you must:
  • You must present a current photo ID, driver’s license, student ID, or passport.
  • You must sign up for a test at least 3 business days prior to a selected test date.
As of January 1, 2011 – personal or business checks will no longer be accepted as a form of payment for testing fees.  Cash or Credit card only.
Checks issued by a local School District will still be accepted at this time.
Explanations:
  • TSI Compliant means that you have passed or are exempt from TSIA2 Assessment, and you are not enrolled in any remedial or development courses.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Q:  What are the hours once in the nursing program?
A:  Once you are accepted in the nursing program you will be in class or clinicals 5 days a week, Monday – Friday.  Class time is usually 8am – 4pm but may vary slightly in each semester.  Clinical times will vary based on which clinical site you are assigned, example:  Hospital setting (Covenant/UMC) 6am – 3pm, but again may vary per semester.  Beginning in 1st semester you will primarily be here at the school in class or skills lab 5 days a week, but towards mid to late 1st semester you will begin actual clinicals at least 1 day a week.  Clinical days may increase as you progress into further semesters.  Please be advised that this is just for informative purposes and is subject to change according to clinical sites availability.  Once accepted you will get more definite times at your nursing orientation.

  2. Q:  Can I work while in the nursing program?
A:  We do not advise students to work while they are enrolled in our nursing program, however that is ultimately the student’s choice.  Nursing school workload is heavy and difficult so if you choose to work, please plan accordingly, and stay organized and on top of your schoolwork.

  3. Q:  Can I take the nursing classes online or at night?
A:  No.  We do not offer any of our nursing classes online, at night, or weekends.

  4. Q:  Can I take more classes a semester or during summer to get ahead and finish the program earlier?
A:  No.  Our program is set up on a strict curriculum and there are no variances allowed from that curriculum.

  5. Q:  Will my classes from another college transfer to SPC?
A:  All non-nursing courses that were taken at Regionally Accredited College/University should transfer with no problem, but you will need to check with the registrar to be sure.  If you are trying to transfer nursing courses into our program from another nursing program, you will have to discuss that with the Director of our program.  The Director must look at the program you were at and how the courses were taught to see if they will be able to substitute for our courses and all nursing courses must be completed within one year to be considered for transfer.  On average most nursing courses will not transfer into our program because every program is set up differently.

  6. Q:  If I am currently enrolled in, or planning to take my prerequisites am I still eligible to apply to the program?
A:  Yes.  If a student has successfully completed English 1301 and Biology 2401 (Anatomy & Physiology 1) and is currently enrolled in Biology 2402 (Anatomy & Physiology II) at the time of application, they are eligible to apply to the ADN program
