Regardless of age or level, education is a process of development of character, knowledge, and ability essential to individual and societal development.  In our particularly diverse society it is important that the citizens of our society understand that they are not the subjects of a government but, rather, that they are the government and must share the responsibility for the survival of that government.  Social Sciences provide the basis for that understanding: how our society has developed, how it functions, and how it can be perfected and preserved.

Also key to our survival is an understanding of other societies and other peoples with whom we share this earth.  We must understand what drives those societies in order that we and our way of life can, indeed, survive and prosper. Without such understanding, the combination of all of the world’s science and technology and all of the world’s wealth and natural resources will not be enough to ensure survival, let alone prosperity.
