SPC to live stream Scholarship and Distinguished Alumni event on Nov. 5

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will host a live-streamed Scholarship and Distinguished Alumni Celebration at 6 p.m.. on Nov. 5 (Thursday). The public is invited to join the celebration by going to https://portal.stretchinternet.com/spcadmin/ and connect through the Live Events section.

The event is the modification of the college’s annual Scholarship Banquet which recognizes SPC scholarship recipients and the individuals who make scholarships possible. A new addition to the traditional Banquet program is the recognition of the annual Distinguished Alumni honorees. Two former students, Deressa Purtell Reid and Terry Hill, will be honored as Distinguished Alumni for 2020.

“Recognizing our outstanding alumni is incredibly special for our alumni and our SPC family,” said Stephanie Smith, alumni coordinator. “Having the opportunity to celebrate former students and all of their accomplishments is always exciting. Although this year may look a little different, we are still thrilled to be able to honor Dereesa and Terry in this special way.”

Julie Gerstenberger, director of development and alumni relations, says her office has been working to move the Distinguished Alumni celebration from the May commencement festivities.  “Integrating it to our annual fall event is the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on these outstanding graduates while also inspiring current students. It will also help our donors see the important role South Plains College can play in the lives of exceptionally successful people.”

Both honorees will appear during the live streamed celebration where they will accept their awards. Reid also will deliver the keynote address.

Reid is currently the administrator of Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Ore. She is being recognized for career and professional achievements centered on developing and implementing operational efficiencies that have enabled the healthcare organizations she has worked with provide better services for patients.

Hill serves as the chief executive officer of The Maroon Group, one of the nation’s largest distributors of specialty chemicals used in multiple industries. He is being recognized for a 30-year career in chemical distribution and sales.
