SPC Workforce Development to host certified nurse aide training class starting Nov. 5

 

LEVELLAND – Spaces are still available for South Plains College’s Certified Nurse Aide class starting from Nov. 5 through Dec. 5 in the Technical Arts Building in Room 120. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. 

The tuition cost is $500. The textbook, “Skills and Techniques for the New Nursing Assistant, 8th Edition” by Barbara Gillogly, can be purchased in the bookstore. Students are responsible for additional fees including the State Exam Fee $104.50; and CPR $15. The instructor will be Tammy Shirley, L.V.N. 

The schedule for the first week of classroom instruction will meet from 4 p.m.. to 8 p.m.. Monday through Friday.For the second, third and fourth week, the class will meet from 4 p.m.. to 8 p.m.. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For the fifth week, the class will meet from 4 p.m.. to 8 p.m.. on Dec. 5 (Wednesday). 

Clinical Instruction is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. on Thursdays during the second, third and fourth weeks. For the fifth week, clinicals will be held on Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Clinicals will be performed at the Levelland Nursing Home. 

The instruction in this course provides detailed education, training and work-based experience as well as direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. 

Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Students will learn the necessary skills to work in long-term care, home health or hospital environments. Upon completion of the 60 hours of classroom and 40 hours of clinicals, each student will be required to take the State of Texas Certified Nurse Aide Competency Examination. 

IMPORTANT: Students must provide proof of immunization for MMR since 1981, Tetanus no older than 10 years, Hepatitis B Series, Varicella or proof of chicken pox, and have a current negative TB test no older than 12 months; photo identification and social security card prior to enrollment. A criminal background check will be performed for all students.
