LUBBOCK – South Plains College Lubbock Center will offer the following community classes for spring 2021.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

This introductory course will focus on basic residential construction maintenance projects.  Student's skills can be applied to basic commercial maintenance.  Additionally, participants will be trained in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) safety, proper equipment and tool usage for given projects; estimate material requirements; demonstrate methods and techniques used in various types of site preparation.  The class is limited to ten (10) students. The cost of the class is $750. The dates run from:

PROFESSIONAL DRIVER TRAINING

This is an introduction into the regulations governing the trucking industry and the qualifications for entry into the field. The purpose of this course is to certify and permit the students. During this course the students will be trained for their Class A Licensing, as well as familiarizing themselves with the Department of Transportation rules and regulations. Students receive preparation for written examination, general truck driving skills with hands-on component and instruction coordinated with the Department of Transportation.

Students must be 18 years of age, have a GED or high school diploma and must possess a valid Class C Texas Drivers Licenses. This is a 200-hour program with 20 CEUs that includes classroom, range and open road driving. New classes begin every two weeks.  The cost is $4995. Class dates are March 29 through April 23, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m..; April 12 through May 7; April 26 through May 21; May 10 through June 5; May 24 through June 18; and June 7 through July 2. All classes are taught at the SPC Reese Center campus.

PHLEBOTOMY

The student will discuss theoretical and practical aspects of specimen collection (including professionalism, ethics, terminology, quality control, and safety); and use basic laboratory.

This is a 10-week class in which students will learn theoretical and practical aspects of blood specimen collections for clinical laboratories. Topics include professionalism, ethics, medical terminology, related anatomy, physiology as well as utilization of blood and non-blood specimen collection supplies and proper techniques.

Enrollment is limit to 10 students. Participants must be 18 years of age. All students will prepare to take the NHA Phlebotomy Certification Test included in this program.  

IMPORTANT:  A student will not be allowed to register or pay for this class without all requirements being met. Criminal background checks will be performed for all students. NO REFUNDS will be given for criminal background checks.

The textbook is entitled “The Complete Textbook of Phlebotomy 5th Edition.” The cost is $565. The classes run from:

PHARMACY TECH TEST PREPARATION 

This is a test preparation review course for pharmacy technicians who will be taking the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. The course is designed to augment your on-the-job training or provide an individual who has extensive knowledge with the tools to successfully complete the national exam. 

This is an introductory course where highly motivated individuals willing to spend a significant amount of outside class time in memorization and other study techniques can also benefit. Subjects covered include pharmacology, safety, terminology, packing, dispensing, distribution, inventory management, ration strengths, business math, calculating IV flow rates and other related topics. 

Students will earn 4.8 CEU credits in this 48-hour course. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam is available all year. Student should expect additional expenses to take licensing exam. The course is limited to 20 students.

The textbook needed for the course is “The Pharmacy Technician 6th Edition.” The cost of the course is $361.  The classes run from:

CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE (CNA)

Students learn the necessary skills to work in long-term care, home health, or hospital environments. A method of instruction providing detail education, training, and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences.  

Upon completion of the 60 hours in the classroom and 40 hours of clinicals, each student will be required to take the State of Texas Certified Nurse Aide Competency Examination with PEARSON VUE. Students then will submit their own applications and testing fees directly to PEARSON VUE after completion of the class. 

CPR Certification is required and not included in tuition fees. Other supplies not included in the tuition and fees are a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope. A maximum of 10 participants will be accepted for this class.

The textbook is entitled “Hartman's Nursing Assistant Care: Long-Term Care  4th Edition by Susan Hedman; Jetta Fuzy RN, MS; and Suzanne Rymer, MSTE, RN, LSW.

Proof of Immunizations is required:

  • MMR – 2 shot Series or TITER
  • Current negative TB Test (no older than 1 year prior to the first day of class)
  • Tetanus (no older than 10 years prior to the first day of class)
  • Hepatitis Series or TITER  **Note: HEP B - only titer needed if student cannot find shot record or is in middle of series**
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) or Proof of Illness
  • Flu Shot required of all students enrolled between Oct. 1 and March 31

Students must provide identification in which the names must match on all documents and not expire before the end of class). A valid driver’s license or ID card and social security card are required. Registration is conducted in person. The cost of the class is $300. The class dates are from June 9 through July 15.

The Certified Nurse Aide Clinical is required for all students taking the Certified Nurse Aide class. A clinical health-related, work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational therapy, skills and concepts learned in the class environment to be applied in actual health care facilities.  Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. The cost is $200. The dates are:
