Rejino Barbeque owner recognizes late wife for valuing SPC education

LEVELLAND – For the past several months, barbecue restaurateur Aaron Rejino of Olton has worked to honor the legacy of his late wife, Christina Rejino, who died of cancer in January. Because of a donation from Christina’s family, her dedication to education will live on at South Plains College.

The Christina Rejino Memorial Impact Scholarship at SPC will support full-time, sophomore business majors. Aaron said Christina worked hard to emphasize the importance of a college education to their kids and the next generation.

“School was very, very important to [Christina], and education was very, very important to her,” Aaron said. “She always had a sense that school was a big part of why she was able to do what she did.”

Christina and Aaron are SPC alumni who moved to Olton in 2016 and co-founded Rejino Barbeque two years later. Aaron said Christina loved to serve people, whether in the form of tasty food or heartfelt support.

“That’s what made her so great in life but also in this business,” he said regarding Christina’s passion for service. “She made everyone feel like family.

Rejino Barbeque was recognized in Texas Monthly’s Top 50 BBQ Joints for the second time earlier this year. Aaron said being on the list in 2021 was a huge accomplishment for him and Christina at the time, and the second recognition was more special.

“I almost feel it means a little more this time because we had such a big team,” he said.

In addition to highlighting the team’s work ethic, Aaron said making the list was a way to honor Christina’s dedication to service.

“There are hours of Texas above and to the east and west of Olton,” he said regarding the many people who stop by the restaurant. “We are very grateful for the recognition in Texas Monthly and understand that it’s a great responsibility.”

To grow the business beyond great barbecue, Aaron said he wants to expand Rejino Sipz, Christina’s soda business idea that opened before she died. He said he hopes to open the drink shop in other areas and serve more people.

“The biggest thing about Christina was she thought anything was possible,” he said. “She knew the value of hard work and service and what those two together could achieve.”
