SPC to unveil Google Garage makerspace on Sept. 9

South Plains College Google Garage

LEVELLAND – South Plains College is set to open its renovated Makerspace Garage, marking a collaborative effort with Google that provides students more opportunities to harness innovation. The Makerspace will be unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 9 in Rm 121 of the Mathand Engineering Building on the Levelland campus.

Kevin Dane, SPC Distinguished Alumnus and vice president of technical infrastructure hardware quality at Google, facilitated the college’s project proposal to the company. Google granted $100,000 to SPC for the renovation of its makerspace into a functional learning area that models a Google Garage.

The updated Makerspace features modular worktables and furniture, expanded power outlets that include drop-down ceiling reels, a mobile whiteboard that can also function as a tabletop, a STEM construction station, and a state-of-the-art, touch-screen monitor.

“We are grateful to Mr. Dane and Google for the opportunity to provide a study and innovation area in the Mathematics and Engineering Building at South Plains College,” Sheyleah Harris-Plant, chairperson of SPC’s Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science Department, said. “The Google Makerspace Garage has tools to help students practice their math and engineering skills and achieve their academic and career goals.”
