SPC instructor joins Percussive Arts Society committee

Phillip Smith, director of percussion in commercial music at South Plains College, was elected to serve on the Percussive Arts Society Drum Set Committee, a group of percussion experts that addresses drum set education and performance standards and makes recommendations for clinics and masterclasses at the PAS International Convention (PASIC). PAS is a global organization that networks percussionists and drummers of all ages.

The Drum Set Committee is one of 17 standing PAS committees that addresses percussion performance, the international percussion community and other related topics. No more than 20 percussionists serve on the committee at one time, and each member serves for three to six years.

“For drummers, being on the PAS Drum Set Committee is equivalent to surgeons being on the board of the American Medical Association,” Smith, a 40-year PAS member, said. “It is a major honor that less than one percent of all drummers are a part of. I'm very honored to have been chosen.”

Smith has been attending PASIC since he was an undergraduate student. He took the first cohort of SPC percussion students to the 50th PASIC in Indianapolis last year and will lead another group to the 2026 convention.
