Scholarship endowment supports SPC nursing and business students

LEVELLAND – After many years of effort and hard work, Lynn Vitatoe has given $10,000 to the Board of Directors of the South Plains College Foundation to establish the Serena Tayse Memorial Nursing & LeeAnn Paxton Honorary Business Scholarship Endowment. A former teacher, diagnostician, and counselor, Vitatoe named the scholarship in honor of her daughters, LeeAnn Paxton and the late Serena Tayse.

“It’s very important for young people to be able to go to school and have that background to do what they love doing,” Vitatoe said.

The scholarship will support the education of South Plains College students in the nursing program during odd-numbered years and students in the business program during even-numbered years. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must complete two semesters (at least 24 hours) at SPC, be a full-time student and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Regarding the meaning of this scholarship, Paxton said getting an education has always been a mainstay in her family.

“For me, it’s being able to bless students, so they can continue their careers,” Paxton said. “For those that might not be able to afford it, this offers the opportunity for them to receive that higher education.”
