The Struggle Is Real: Finding Balance and Implementing Innovations to Help Struggling Students

We know that burn-out and stress are affecting our ability to learn and teach. The struggle is definitely real--for both students and instructors--and it doesn't show signs of letting up. However, we may be able to take what we know students are experiencing and use that to develop more innovative and hopeful strategies of support. This session will explore what students are facing that has contributed to their struggles in and out of the classroom and how to acknowledge and engage students in learning without stressing ourselves out in the process.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to
  • Identify common reasons students struggle
  • Discuss the essential role of struggle in the learning process
  • Describe research-based promising practices for supporting students who struggle
  • Determine how to develop a balanced approach to helping students
